Happy Birthday & Get Well Soon

Today is Abigail's birthday.  She's had a fever off and on for the last two days.  It's put a real damper on the birthday festivities.  She also had a Father/Daughter dance that she and her dad were supposed to attend tonight.  Tomorrow both sets of grandparents were coming for cake and ice cream...and presents, but we don't want to expose them to whatever bug Abigail's picked up.  She's pretty disappointed, but been a really good sport about it.

I've tried to make her day as special as possible.  This morning we made waffles and pancake puffs...with candles.  We've rented movies and video games.  We've decorated a cake that is too big now that family is not coming tomorrow to help eat it.  We've opened presents and painted fingernails with a new nail polish set that she got for her birthday.  And, we let her have her choice of take-out which was McDonald's.  That's how much I was trying to make her day great.  I let her eat a McDonald's Happy Meal.

We put those allergy safe jelly beans to good use on her birthday cake.  Abigail asked for a chocolate cake decorated with a rainbow, peace signs, hearts and stars.  She had a good time making the rainbow and peace sign "clouds" and instructing me where to put the hearts and stars. It turned out pretty cute, and she was thrilled with the end results.

Happy Birthday dear Abigail!  Love you!  Hope you feel better soon.

beautiful - how'd you make the white frosting so smooth? Mine is always a mess.

also, do you buy any commercial ice cream that you feel is safe for Abigail? I have yet to feel confident about ice cream in the grocery store, so we make our own, but that is time consuming.

Hi Laura. Regarding the ice cream, I buy the Harris Teeter Natural Organic brand. I've found that brand to be really good about labeling for cross-contamination.

My mom taught me the trick about smoothing the frosting. You use a paper towel. You've got to find one that doesn't have texture (I'm on the hunt now because I don't have any more). Frost the cake and then before the icing "sets up", place the paper towel over a section and lightly rub over the top of it to smooth it out. You'll know if the icing is still too "wet", it'll stick to the paper towel when you pull it off. If so, just wait a minute or so and try again.

Laura, to switch topics, I contacted Trader Joes about their labeling. I did find that one of the cereals that I purchase that isn't labeled is manu. with peanuts/tree nuts. Luckily, it's not one that Abigail eats. I'm going to post about that soon, but wanted to give you a heads up because you asked about that.

thanks for all the info. I never thought to look into HT brand! I bought the Cascadian farms Cinnamon Crunch and my son loves it. Going to try Fruitful O's next. Just wish it wasn't so expensive! Thanks again!!

Are you buying the cereal at Wal-Mart? They have the best price on Cascadian Farms.

FYI, most of the HT Naturals/Organic brand is not safe, just the canned goods and some of their frozen product. All of their cereal, crackers & cookies are manu. with peanuts/tree nuts.

I don't usually shop at Walmart, but may have to make a trip b/c I am paying $3.99 per box, and they are small boxes!

I talked to the QA manager at Hunter Farms (who makes HT Naturals ice cream). They also make the Hunter and HT brand ice cream which features some PB varieties, but the Naturals come in a quart size and right now they do not make a PB variety on that line because of the size. I was thrilled! Can I say THANK YOU loud enough!!
